5.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on the over-priced Bialetti, December 18, 2009

Bene Casa's 6-cup "cafetera," as they call these units in Spain, is an excellent substitute for the WAY over-priced Bialetti. Clearly some folks like the "charm" of being able to say that their "cafetera" was manufacture in Italy instead of China (wher Bene Casa's unit is made), but if the quality of the unit is equivalent, is it worth paying $20 extra for the name? I do not. This is all aluminum, just like Bialetti's, and all three disassembling parts join flawlessly. The espresso made is the same as that by Bialetti's and other "cafeteras." So, unless you have money to burn, buy the Bene Casa brand and you'll enjoy a quality unit that produces the same excellent espresso. Now, if I can only find a 12-cup unit by Bene Casa...

3.0 out of 5 stars Stove Top Espresso Coffee Maker - Not Bad..., July 12, 2010

Got this in hopes to make my daily coffee (versus getting a typical coffeemaker).
At first opening, everything seemed ok.
Made my initial first pot and didn't know how high or low the gas stove was supposed to be to get the percolating action going.
After figuring out the right temperature, it seemed fine enough... every now and then it would seem that I would have some water leftover in the bottom reservoir - not sure if that's normal or not.
And as others have reported, recently I had this unit over the gas flame a little off center while washing the dishes and smelled burning plastic. Thank God I was in the kitchen and was able to prevent a fire!
The handle melted somewhat but remained intact and I can still use the unit (now that I place the unit more off-centered so the handle is far away from the gas flames as possible). Instead of grabbing it by the handle I just have to use an over mitt and grip the unit from the top. Not ideal but still... Read more

If you can afford a better product, go for it. This is very cheaply made. I wish just about every day that I got the Bialetti I wanted instead of this.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT COFFEE! GREAT PRICE!!!, March 18, 2010

Too bad I bought the Mr. Coffee four cup machine before this one. That one tasted like plastic no matter what I did. This gizmo is cheap, brews at 180 degrees, (I tested it) and that's the temperature recommended by the coffee experts. Anything hotter than that cooks the coffee and it has a burnt taste. I drink my java black with no sweetener, so I'm fussy about that burnt taste. This makes a great cup of coffee. No burnt taste, no plastic taste, is convenient to use and easy to clean. VERY good at this price point.

3.0 out of 5 stars Get the Elite instead, December 11, 2009

This is basically the same brewer as the Elite Quisine 4 cup brewer which you can buy here at Amazon. The same manufacturer must make both for different companies. One says "Elite" and the other says "Continental" but they are clones. Both are so inexpensive I got one of each, in case I need a spare. As inexpensive as they are, I don't know how long they will last. This one seems to have a slightly lower brewing temperature than the Elite Quisine and the caraf doesn't have calibrations for the amount of coffee that the Elite has. This one is also a lot cheaper. I paid only $12.00 and now it is down to $9 and change. The Elite is 19.95.

My only real criticism of this one is that the brewing temperature could be hotter, as the other brewer is. I measured the temperature in the pot on this at 179 degrees Farenheit but that is after the water soaks through the beans and drips through the air about 6 inches. The Elite temps out at 185 in the pot. It tastes hotter... Read more

I had the identical unit for several years, when the crafe broke I did a little searching and found this one which I immediately ordered.

I love this little coffee maker. It's compact and user friendly - the smoked water tank is easy to see through, the lid lifts open easily and there's room to pour the water unobstructed, the coffee receptacle swings out of the way and each of these operations can be done with one hand. It has a valve to allow serving while brewing but the mechanism is a little delicate which makes swinging the coffee receptacle open one handed a little fiddly but nothing like say the Mr Coffee. My old one was a cast-off and that valve mechanism was broken when I got it but I loved the compact size and excellent coffee it made so while I kept shopping for replacements I never found one I liked better. I live on a sailboat so space is a premium and this little unit fits in perfectly.

The power switch and water tank graduations are on the... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars A how-to, for the curious, September 25, 2006

This review is from: Bialetti 6799 Moka Express 3-Cup Stovetop Espresso Maker (Kitchen)
I got my Bialetti 6-cup about a week and a half ago. It took me a while to learn all the tricks of the trade, so I thought I'd piece it together here.

1. Rinse out the pot, preferably with warm water and not with any abrasive cloth.

2. Fill the bottom of the pot with water to the line. If you go over it, the pot might explode. Seriously.

3. Fill the middle filter with ground espresso roast (dark) beans. Grind them a little bit finer then auto drip grind, to about the grain of fine sand. Level off the filter, and put it in the pot.

4. Screw on the top hard. Don't use the handle to screw it, because it could snap off.

5. My stove goes LO, 1, 2, ... 8, 9, HI; I usually set it between 3 and 5. It takes 5-ish minutes to finish. Take it off the stove when you hear it gurgling and sputtering.

Things I've learned:
*If it's going to be mainly you drinking the espresso, consider a 3-cup. I usually make a double... Read more

Unless you are ready to be ruined for any other coffee, and the three cup size will not be big enough! Decades of my life wasted. I've discovered real coffee so late in life, my only lament about buying this espresso pot is the tears shed over all those mornings I *could* have had REAL coffee...

Easy to use, a little time consuming to clean, handsome enough to leave out as a decoration. Unscrew the bottom, fill the bottom half with cold water, fill the little filter cup with fine ground coffee (note that "espresso" is a grind, not a roast), screw it back together, and put it on the stove top. In five minutes or less, you have the most incredible coffee ever. With the internal parts, it is not hard to clean, but time consuming, especially given the time it takes to cool off enough to take apart (the other reason to get a bigger one, the little one is too slow to reload).

The styling is a little retro, but handsome enough to lend a kitchen a quirky flair... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars The only drawback? You'll need a larger one for company..., August 3, 2005
By
This review is from: Bialetti 6799 Moka Express 3-Cup Stovetop Espresso Maker (Kitchen)
Recently picked up a 3 cup Bialetti Moka Express while on holiday and couldn't wait to get it home and broken in. I've tried stove-top Italian coffee makers before, and this model has not disappointed.

Sturdy and well made, this unit only has about five parts, all of them metal or heavy-duty plastic so very little can go wrong. This should last ages if properly cared for.

Just remember to keep it simple; fresh, cold water in the lower chamber (stopping *before* you get to the brass outlet valve) and fill the grounds basket with an espresso grind coffee (good excuse to buy more coffee) without packing it too tightly. Place on your stovetop ring and don't go anywhere. Wait a few minutes, and you have an excellent espresso to start the day or to add to steamed milk after dinner. I can't wait to have some with a cigar this weekend. I've been trying some Cafe Bustello the last few mornings and it's been great. Yeah, I know it's canned, but so are most of the... Read more
